Open Door Creative
United States
Приєднався 27 лис 2017
How’s it going UA-cam? I've created this channel to provide aspiring art directors and copywriters with the tips, tricks, and insights necessary to break into the advertising industry-the resources I wish I would have had prior to my career.
But who the hell am I? My name is Kevin Forister, a Creative Director for a large agency in Dallas, TX. I’ve worked on an array of big brands from Samsung and Audi to Pizza Hut and NASA. I started off as an art director a decade ago and today I hope to be your online guide to help you launch your own career as a creative professional.
And for those who are a little more serious on their pursuit, check out my book Breaking into Art Direction in order to learn more and build your portfolio from scratch. You can find it over on Amazon!
The door is open. Your move.

The Future of Art Direction: AI And Whether Or Not We're All Doomed
What does the future of art direction look like? Will AI essentially pull the mouse and pencil out from under our hands? Or is everyone just overreacting?
For many, AI instills fear and apprehension. I've seen many industry friends deliberately avoiding the exploration of its vast potential due to the perceived threat it poses to their careers. Totally understandable. After all, we find ourselves navigating uncharted territory. Or are we?
In today's video, we look forward confidently into the emerging world of AI-vertising and provide an overview of 20 creative AI tools that should be on your radar. So if you feel overwhelmed, like you're behind on all the AI talk, this video should quickly get you caught up to speed (and hopefully put you at ease).
As always, thanks for watching!

Great information!
this was so so so helpful I love you thank you
This was super helpful! Love the detail and tips
Appreciate that! Let me know if you have any questions!
Hello, do you have a recomendation on where to study a master in Art direction that teaches how to use AI also? I just finished my Advertising degree and would love to be prepared in this area :) thank you!
Unfortunately I don’t. Because of how fast it’s moving, it would be hard to currently build a curriculum around it. My best advice is to use UA-cam to learn it in conjunction with university.
I love this so much haha …maybe I’m not that creative… “nah fuck that!!” 👌
Thank you. now i know what to do next 🙏🏽
This was a great video! Very helpful. Just made my boxes and ready to get to work. Thanks, Kevin 🙏🏻
So I'm at box 31 and I'll admit, I started using AI to help me with some more ideas. I know you gave us questions, but I already used those questions to help me get to 31. How will I ever get to 100? Any other tips on how to just make the ideas flow? Are you timing yourself? Are you intentionally jotting down stupid ideas just to get through the exercise?

bro looks like bonzo from fishing with flair
My bf is an art director for TV and film and he does a lot of set building, buying, hiring, then sells props back to stores at the end of the shoot. Usually, it's the film director with the overall vision, but the art director can tell them what they're able to do with the budget (budget always has to go over in order to get something worth producing, but the producers always shoot low with the original budget to keep production from going too high) and brings ideas to the table on how to do it or how to make it even better. So there is creativity involved; He has a very quick way of visualizing what a general idea should or could look like and uses his creativity to problem solve. But you also have to be VERY good with people. You work with a lot of people and vendors during a long day of prep or shooting and you won't get called back if you are rude or just in general bad with ppl. You have to start as a PA or assistant. If you are handy but also creative and can work long days, then art in film might be doable for you. But my bf is hyperactive and easily bored and this job is perfect for him, so you would be a bad fit if you don't like a ton of physical activity or need lots of sleep. But you stand by on shoot days waiting for mundane tasks such as resetting visual elements of scenes, whether you are the art director or assistant. So it's a balance of working your butt off and then being patient and waiting around for the next scene or reset.
this was very valuable!
Just discovering your channel and it seems like everything I’ve done thus far in life sounds like Art Directing. I always enjoyed creating something that has never been seen or done before. Sometimes I have to use my graphic design skills, my photography skills, my videographer skills, my music skills, or even my own looks to showcase the art thats inside of me. This is truly amazing to finally put a title on what I want to do in life and fully pursue it. Thank you for your content.
Love that! Live that passion!
You overlooked a few things, like directing on set, where you create the scene and tell the story visually. Plus, being able to draw storyboards is a big plus. And if you mix in some marketing and understanding how customers think, you're into visual merchandising. More skills mean more doors open! 😅 In a nutshell, an Art Director is someone who sees things differently, always aiming to tell a story that touches people's hearts and guides their feelings.
Other than great a great portfolio and skill sets, I’m pretty anti social and public speaking is not my specialty I’m in my first year of GD and would like to be an art director do you have Tips or tricks on this aspect of the job?
The presenting portion (at most shops) happens more and more at a senior level. In the meantime, you’ll be given smaller opportunities to grow that skill but it won’t be the main focus of your job. See my video on presenting as I think it will help you.
Are the softwares you listed still relevant to learn in 2024?
100%. Industry standard. Would also learn Blender for 3D
what are some good portfolio schools in Los Angeles?
The Book Shop

@@OpenDoorCreative Thank you!
Man this sounds so fun! I would love to be in your shoes!
I have imposter syndrome bad! I am 20 years outdated and just started my bachelor degree in web design. I’m so scared I’m not good enough.
More common than you could ever know. Just do your best to refine your craft daily. I can’t say that the imposter syndrome will go away (I feel it all the time) but your confidence in your abilities will grow and some of that will help fight it. Best of luck. You got this!
Very helpful and informative
I'm a Cinematographer whose now applying to AD School here in Scotland and I'm a bit intimidated haha. I'm not a graphic designer and have zero interest in being one. I'm more drawn to copywriting, tv and web adverts given my background in production. Not sure what to focus on in order to one day become an Art Director if I personally do not have these skills that many if not most will have.
this is gold
🙏
Dude I really love that video, it gave me a good push and already excited for my next presentation, Thanks
Love that! Appreciate the kind words. And best to ya!
I have question, what if you just want this career as side job, is this a good career for like part time hobby? Sorry if i cant be anymore clearer
Sure thing. Wouldn’t say art direction is a side job since there is more complexity and larger conceptual projects unless you want to try and freelance for short term spurts at agencies BUT you could totally be a graphic designer on the side and take on smaller design projects.
I am currently in my second year of studies and I had no idea what I wanted to do when I got out off school. After watching this video, it really gave me a boost. I plan to major in Art direction and I feel super excited about it. Thanks Open Door Creative!
Freaking love that! Have fun. Explore. Look around. Welcome aboard!
This is cute, more of this please with this cartoon design
I loved this video! You just unpacked it all for me, very enlightening!!! Thanks!
Awesome. Glad it could help. Let me know if you have any questions.
Yess I am interested
You got this!!
What I'm actually wondering is if you can make a video that goes more in-depth with your techniques of actually creating the logo in illustrator. The tools, shortcuts, etc you use in your day to day design. I see a lot of videos going over the general approach to this but I have been finding it hard to find videos that actually show the process of making it symmetrical and balanced! If so, major thanks from an inspiring graphic designer :)
if not clothing, food and cars. what are some products you recomed taking. really helpful video, thank you so much
So many product and brand categories out there to choose from. Try scrolling through Amazon or at your local stores. You could pick anything from a food delivery service, tech gadget, trash bags, bathroom staple to a kitchen appliance, solar panels, maid service, Tupperware and more. The world is your oyster!! Walk around your house even for inspiration.
What was your route to your career? What did you major in?
ua-cam.com/video/bAHHx-htKJ8/v-deo.htmlsi=UfSLwEw09O92HHQb here is a video of my journey in. Also check out my playlist of car interviews with creatives as you’ll see there are a lot of routes in. I also have a video about the degree to be an AD on the channel as well.
whats the legal folder for?
Signed client contracts for projects if you’re a freelancer.
✋ "promo sm"
great insight, tip: change music:))
Thanks for this video! Just curious what's that table you're using? Love it!
I’ve recently discovered your channel, and wanted to let you know I think your work is awesome! You’re a great resource for an aspiring designer!
Thank you! That means a lot to me. Appreciate you reaching out.
I’m primarily curious/concerned about the “safety” of using these tools without it possibly biting back in the future.
I’m so glad to see other industry professionals as pumped as we are about these disruptive changes to our industry (and lives). We’ve spent the last 6 months reassessing our internal processes and inserting AI wherever we can. Everything from research to concept development. Keep it up!
100% agree. And thanks! You too!
How many people have you fired as a result?
I applied for graphic design for a small company and ended up with junior art director responsibilities. Help
Totally get it. There is a lot of overlap in the positions. Especially in a small shop where you have to wear more hats. The most important thing is to align on expectations with your higher ups to agree on your role and responsibilities.
@@OpenDoorCreative I just don’t feel I’m in the rock star phase like I want to use this opportunity and challenge myself
@@Gwosts that’s great! Jump into it and see where it leads. Best of luck!

Love to hear it!
This was dope!❤ THANX! 🎉
Thank you! Appreciate the kind words Jeremy!
21 years old watching this video because I'm a hard-core gamer a fan of open world games, I idolize Rockstar Games as my inspiration for wanting to try to join the Rockstar Games team as an art director or for any other major studios, only problem is I know nothing about game development, I just have a good imagination and as you stated in the video I'm just trying to get a lifelong career going, where do I start? What websites do I go to do I need a PC?
thank you
Thanks bro, you gave us excellent resources for our work. Best wishes :-)
this was a really helpful video all the way through, i’m starting to look into what moves to make towards this career path and i learned a lot, also as a former art student i appreciate that your way of critiquing was very respectful of the creator (especially for “ripping them apart”) which sadly was a bit too refreshing lol thank you again subbed
Thank you! I appreciate that. Let me know if you have any questions as you make your way through some of my videos. Happy entry into the career!
We need a "What is a creative director" video now. Now that I'm a cd, I was looking for some management tips and this video popped up.
